Sagal's mother, Sara Zwilling, was a singer who died of heart disease in 1975; Both Katey and Norman also acknowledged when Norman received the 2016 Achievement in Television e Xcellence award that she was not only his goddaughter, but that he was also the one who had introduced her parents.Sagal graduated from California Institute of the Arts and began her acting career in Hollywood, appearing in several made for TV movies between 19, including a small role as a receptionist in the Columbo installment "Candidate for Crime" (directed by her father).
